    Who is the speaker talking to: John Proctor

    What is the significance to the play: Adultery is a commandment in the Bible and Proctor liked what he did. Elizabeth wanted to have Proctor.

    The significance was that Elizabeth would find any kind of undermining comment in order to get under John's skin. She yearned and lusted for him, and he knew this. He was just as guilty as she when they were involved, but tried his hardest to return to his wife and abandon Elizabeth. All together it was a sick infatuation game between a demonic pre-teen and a needy man.

    The significance is Elizabeth had a strong desire for John. Abigail was manipulative and John was in fact needy. He wants to move on and forget about Abigail and go back to Elizabeth.

    Elizabeth Proctor says this to John (her husband) when Rev. Hale is asking John if he knows his 10 commandments. He is asking him because John and Elizabeth are suspected to be witches and not christians. So as John is reciting them the one he forgets is adultery. So Elizabeth chimes in to help John. It's ironic he forgot that commandment since he was guilty of adultery against his wife with their housekeeper, Abigail Williams.

    Elizabeth is talking to John. This quote is significant to the play because at this point John is listing off the ten commandments and has listed all but one and Elizabeth had to tell him the one he missed. The term is irony.
