Giles Corey says this to Rev. Hale after his wife is accused of being a witch. He had told some men in town that his wife Martha Corey had been reading some books and he didn't know what the books were about. When he confronts them it seems he thinks that they misinterpreted what he said. He never said that his wife was reading witchery.

  8. Giles say this to Rev Hale

Giles is trying to protect his wife, because they are trying to accuse her of being a witch in witchcraft. He didn't call her a witch, but he said she reads books in the corner and won't let him see them. He just trying to see what may have caused it.

  9. Giles Corey says this to Rev. Hale and this is when giles wife is accused of witchcraft. The significance is that giles is the one that told the village about his wife reading the books so he is the one that caused his wife to get arrested. So now he is trying to protect her from being executed.

Giles Corey is saying this to Rev. Hale. The significance of this quote is that earlier in the play Giles makes a comment about his wife reading books, but later in the play when every one is getting accused for witch craft his wife Martha Corey. Giles claims that he was misunderstood when he spoke. He does not want his wife being blamed for witch craft witch in my opinion Martha was not witchcraft because she was only reading books but back in those days women did not read thats the only reason why her behaiveor was unusual. Literary element found in this quote was Irony. The irony in it is that he said something about his wife and their using his own words against him.
