Quotation #4

Who said it? Who is the speaker talking to? What is the significance to the play? Do you recognize any literary elements?

“You must understand, sir, that a person is either with this court or he must be counted against it, there be no road between. This is a sharp time, now, a precise time—we live no longer in the dusky afternoon when evil mixed itself with good and befuddled the world. Now, by God's grace, the shining sun is up, and them that fear not light will surely praise it.

  2. Judge Danforth to Giles Corey

Significance: Basically their world was biased. Either you're a follower of materialistic religion, or you're a witch.
--This quote reminds me of Psalms 23:4
"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

Thus the irony, manipulation was used through their version of belief. Biased decisions conquered all.

Danforth said this to Giles because he was being iffy about what side he was on, either for the court, witch was Gods side, or against the court ( witch for them was as if he was on the devils side). A literacy element i see in this is personification, were it says "evil mixed itself with good" evil cant literaly mix itself with anything.

The Judge tells this to Giles Corey. Giles is in front of the court and the Judge is wanting him to confess to witchcraft. In normal words the Judge is telling him to pick one side or the other. There is only two choices. Choose or die!
