What is the significance to the play: He sees everything in either black or white; Salem and everyone either belonged to the Devil or God.

ReplyDeleteSignificance: Basically their world was biased. Either you're a follower of materialistic religion, or you're a witch.
--This quote reminds me of Psalms 23:4
"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."
Thus the irony, manipulation was used through their version of belief. Biased decisions conquered all.

Danforth is saying this to Giles. He is basically telling him to choose between following God or following the devil.

Danforth said this to Giles because he was being iffy about what side he was on, either for the court, witch was Gods side, or against the court ( witch for them was as if he was on the devils side). A literacy element i see in this is personification, were it says "evil mixed itself with good" evil cant literaly mix itself with anything.

ReplyDeleteDanforth is talking to Francis. Francis guaranteed that no harm would come to the people that signed the paper, but now those people will have to go to court because of him and possibly be convicted of witchcraft. The significance is you either follow the devil or follow God.
